  • Scripture records no dream of a rainbow, but the rainbow is one of the few images God defines himself.
  • “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth” (Genesis 9:13).
  • The sign faces God rather than us: “Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant” (Genesis 9:16).
  • The Hebrew word is simply bow — the weapon. A bow hung arc-upward in the clouds is a weapon laid aside.
  • It returns at the far end of Scripture: “A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne” (Revelation 4:3). The promise made on a muddy hillside is set around the seat of God.

Scripture records no dream of a rainbow, and gives no meaning to one.
