概要
- Fifty is one of the few numbers in Scripture that genuinely carries weight, and it carries it in one direction: release.
- The fiftieth year is the Jubilee (Leviticus 25:10) — seven sevens and then the year after. Land returned to the family that held it and those in service went free, because the land belonged to God (25:23).
- Whether Israel ever kept it is unclear. No celebration is recorded, and the prophets’ complaints about accumulated land suggest neglect.
- The same count produces Pentecost, “fiftieth” in Greek (Leviticus 23:16). Jerusalem was full of pilgrims for that harvest festival, which is why the crowd in Acts 2 was already assembled.
- Luke 4:18-19 has Jesus read Jubilee language — “the year of the Lord’s favour” — and say it is fulfilled that day.
