17 Bible Verses for Loneliness, and What Scripture Says About Being Alone

  • Scripture separates being alone from being lonely: Jesus withdrew to lonely places on purpose (Luke 5:16), and Hosea 2:14 has God leading his people into the wilderness to speak tenderly there.
  • Psalm 23 changes person at verse 4 — God is spoken about until the valley, and spoken to from there on.
  • Psalm 27:10 imagines being forsaken by both father and mother and says the Lord will receive the one left.
  • Psalm 68:6, “God sets the lonely in families,” gives a household as God’s answer to loneliness, and Romans 12:15 and Galatians 6:2 ask other believers to be part of it.
  • Revelation 21:3-4 ends with God living among his people and wiping every tear from their eyes.

The Bible answers loneliness in two ways: with the promise that God is present, and with other people. Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “he will never leave you nor forsake you,” and Psalm 68:6 says, “God sets the lonely in families.” Scripture also separates being alone from being lonely.
