  • Psalm 14:1 and Psalm 53:1 open with the fool who says in his heart “There is no God,” and the Hebrew word there, nabal, is also the name of Abigail’s husband in 1 Samuel 25.
  • Proverbs 1:7 sets fools who despise wisdom and instruction against the fear of the LORD, and the rest of Proverbs describes the fool by conduct: refusing advice, venting anger, quarrelling and returning to his folly.
  • Proverbs 26:4 and 26:5 give opposite advice about answering a fool, one after the other, with a different reason for each.
  • In the Gospels God calls the rich man with the bigger barns a fool (Luke 12:20), and Jesus warns that whoever says “You fool!” to a brother “will be liable to the hell of fire” (Matthew 5:22).
