23 Bible Verses About Water



  • Genesis 1:2 and Genesis 7:11 use the same Hebrew word, tehom, for the deep, and the flood pours in from the waters above and below that God divided at creation.
  • Joshua 4:23 says the Lord dried up the Jordan as he had dried up the Red Sea.
  • Isaiah 55:1-3 explains its invitation to “come to the waters” as listening to God, and Amos 8:11 threatens a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.
  • John 7:39 says Jesus’ “rivers of living water” meant the Spirit.
  • Revelation 22:1-2 takes its river and its healing leaves from Ezekiel 47.

In the Bible, water is something God made and rules, the means of washing, and a picture of what God gives the thirsty. It covers the earth (Genesis 1:2), floods it (Genesis 7:11-12), parts for Israel (Exodus 14:21-22) and goes calm at Jesus’ word (Mark 4:39).
