Prayers for House Cleansing: A Christian Way to Cleanse and Bless Your Home

  • A Christian house cleansing can follow five steps with a prayer for each: confession, removing occult objects, making peace, resisting evil and asking God’s blessing.
  • Short prayers cover moving into a house where others lived, a death in the house, a season of fighting or illness, and fear at night.
  • The Orthodox Great Blessing of Waters at Epiphany, in Hapgood’s 1906 translation, asks that the water serve “the sanctification of their houses.”
  • Lasance’s Catholic Girl’s Guide (1906) prints an indulgenced family prayer, approved by Leo XIII in 1889, ending “Bless this house.”
  • The Bible describes the cleansing of a house with a spreading mark in its walls (Leviticus 14), Jacob’s household putting away idols (Genesis 35:2–4) and the cleansing of the temple under Hezekiah (2 Chronicles 29:16).
  • Burning sage, salt lines and chants have no place in the Orthodox and Catholic blessings of a house, which ask God to act and use water blessed by prayer.
