  • The number 99 has no assigned meaning in the Bible. Where it appears it is counting, and the counting matters for reasons unrelated to the figure.
  • Abram was ninety-nine when God appeared and renamed him Abraham, “father of many” — twenty-four years after the promise, and before a single child existed (Genesis 17:1-5).
  • The ninety-nine sheep are left in open country so the shepherd can go after one (Luke 15:4). Economically that is foolish, which is the argument.
  • Jesus told it to people who had complained that he ate with sinners. They were the ninety-nine, and their objection was that he was attending to the one.
  • The parable does not condemn the ninety-nine. It asks them to be glad, which is harder.

The number 99 has no assigned meaning in the Bible. It appears in two places, and both of them are about somebody being left behind or left waiting. Neither is numerology. Both are worth the visit. Does the number 99 mean anything in the Bible?
