- The reason given is memory, not decoration: the tassels are to be looked at, so that the commands are remembered (Numbers 15:39).
- Rabbinic sources say the dye came from a sea creature. After the temple fell and the dye trade collapsed, the identification was lost, and tassels have been worn without the blue thread for well over a thousand years.
- The leading modern identification is Murex trunculus, argued by Isaac Herzog; its dye turns blue rather than purple in sunlight. Widely accepted, not universal.
- Blue is not called the colour of heaven in Scripture. That chain — sea, sky, throne — is later commentary.

The rabbinic description of the hillazon and the sea-sky-throne association are in the Talmud (Menachot 43b). Isaac Herzog’s doctoral work on the identification of tekhelet, and the finding that Murex trunculus dye turns blue on exposure to sunlight, are the basis of the modern identification; excavated murex shell heaps and dye installations along the Phoenician coast are archaeological record. The identification is presented here as widely accepted rather than settled.
