蜥蜴在圣经中出现了两次，而这两处经文的观点几乎截然相反。
《利未记》11:29-30 将五种蜥蜴列为不洁之物。译者们对其中几种生物的鉴定存在分歧，而《钦定本圣经》对这些不确定性的处理方式也各不相同。
《箴言》30:28 将蜥蜴列为四种“极聪明”的小生物之一：它可以用手捕捉，却出现在君王的宫殿里。
