  • Only Matthew and Luke carry a nativity: Matthew follows Joseph, who learns everything in dreams, and Luke follows Mary, who is awake and asks a question.
  • The two accounts agree on a short list: Mary, a virgin pledged to Joseph of David’s line; conception by the Holy Spirit; Bethlehem; Herod’s reign; the name Jesus given by an angel; and Nazareth afterwards.
  • Luke’s word for the full guest room is the one he uses for the upper room at the last supper, not the word he uses for a commercial inn.
  • Matthew’s visitors arrive at a house and find a child, which is how both accounts can stand without being forced into one scene.
  • Paul never tells the story: born of a woman, born under the law is the whole of it, and probably the earliest written statement about the birth we have.

Only two of the four Gospels tell the story of Jesus’ birth, and they tell it from different sides. Matthew follows Joseph, who is told what to do in dreams. Luke follows Mary, who asks the angel how this will happen. Mark and John have no birth narrative. The two accounts agree on a short list and otherwise tell different parts of the story.
