  • Numbers 26:59 names Miriam as the sister of Moses and Aaron; in Exodus 2 an unnamed sister watches the infant Moses at the Nile and brings his mother to nurse him.
  • Leah and Rachel, Laban’s daughters, were both married to Jacob, and Genesis 30:1 says Rachel “became jealous of her sister.”
  • The five daughters of Zelophehad asked Moses for their father’s property, and Numbers 27:8 made their request a law for any man who leaves no son.
  • The sisters Martha and Mary appear in Luke 10 and John 11; Luke 10:40 records Martha’s complaint that “my sister has left me to do the work by myself.”
  • In Mark 3:35 Jesus calls anyone who does God’s will his “brother and sister and mother,” and Paul calls Phoebe and Apphia “our sister” (Romans 16:1; Philemon 1:2).

The Bible speaks of sisters in two ways: women born into the same family, and women in the church whom Jesus and the apostles call sisters. The family stories include Moses’s sister at the Nile (Exodus 2:4), Leah and Rachel (Genesis 29:30-31) and the five daughters of Zelophehad (Numbers 27:7).
