Sommario
- Baptists are Christians. Baptist is one family of Protestant churches, the largest in the United States at 12 percent of adults (Pew, 2023–24), with 53 million baptized believers in Baptist World Alliance bodies worldwide.
- Baptists write confessions such as the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, but they hold that the Bible alone is the authority for faith and that confessions are only guides.
- Nondenominational churches, 7 percent of U.S. adults and the only Protestant family growing as a share of the population, are mostly evangelical and close to Southern Baptists in belief and attendance. But each writes its own statement of faith, and studies find the pastor often carries more weight than a members’ vote.
- Churches named “Christian Church” usually come from the Stone-Campbell Movement. Like Baptists they immerse believers, but the Disciples link baptism with forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38) and celebrate the Lord’s Supper every week.
