  • ギリシャ語の ヒュポクリテース はもともと舞台俳優を意味し、マタイによる福音書6章2節、5節、16節でイエスは、人に見られるために施し、祈り、断食をする人々に対してこの言葉を用いています。
  • イザヤ書29章13節は、心は神から遠く離れているのに唇だけで神を敬うことを描写しており、イエスはマタイによる福音書15章7-9節で、パリサイ人と律法学者を非難するためにこの箇所を引用しています。
  • マタイによる福音書7章3-5節とローマ人への手紙2章1節は、自分自身が行っている過ちを他人に指摘して非難することを偽善として扱っています。
