概要

  • “Circle” in Isaiah 40:22 translates chug, the noun behind “circuit” in Job 22:14 and “compass” in Proverbs 8:27; Brown-Driver-Briggs lists all three under “vault of the heavens”.
  • Job 26:7 says God “hangeth the earth upon nothing”, and four verses later Job speaks of “the pillars of heaven”.
  • The “four corners of the earth” in Isaiah 11:12 translates kanaph, wings or edges, the word behind “the ends of the earth” in Job 38:13.
  • Psalm 19:4-6 and Ecclesiastes 1:5 describe the sun rising, setting and running its circuit.
  • Jeremiah 31:37 says God will cast off Israel if heaven can be measured and the earth’s foundations searched out.

The King James Bible speaks of the earth in more than one way. God “sitteth upon the circle of the earth” (Isaiah 40:22) and “hangeth the earth upon nothing” (Job 26:7), and the same books speak of its foundations, its pillars and “the four corners of the earth” (Isaiah 11:12).
