Summary

  • Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything (Genesis 14:20), and Jacob vowed a full tenth at Bethel (Genesis 28:22).
  • Numbers 18:21 gives Israel’s tithe to the Levites in place of land, and the Levites gave a tithe of that tithe to the priest.
  • Deuteronomy 14:23 has the household eat the tithe before the Lord, and every third year’s tithe fed the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless and the widow (Deuteronomy 26:12).
  • Malachi 3:8-10 charges the whole nation with robbing God “in your tithes and contributions” and calls for the full tithe to be brought into the storehouse.
  • Jesus told the Pharisees they should have practised justice and mercy “without neglecting the others” (Matthew 23:23), and Paul told the Corinthians, “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

A tithe is a tenth of what the fields and the animals produce, set apart for God. The law of Moses calls it holy to the Lord (Leviticus 27:30) and uses it to support the Levites, who had no land, and every third year to feed the poor. Churches differ on whether the tithe binds Christians today.
