Prayers for a New Car: Buying It, Blessing It and Driving It



  • Short prayers cover choosing a car, paying for it without crushing debt, needing a car without the money for one, an honest deal, thanksgiving, pride, the first drive, passengers, patience in traffic, a new driver and upkeep.
  • The Russian Orthodox Trebnik has a short rite for blessing a vehicle, “the rite of blessing a chariot”: Psalm 90 (Psalm 91 in the King James numbering), one prayer and holy water inside and out.
  • A Moscow-region parish guide says the blessing takes about ten minutes, covers any vehicle, and is no guarantee against accidents.
  • Hapgood’s 1906 Orthodox service book has a Rite of Blessing for a Journey whose final prayer asks Christ to send an angel guide, as he did for Tobias.
  • The Catholic Roman Ritual’s “Blessing of a Vehicle or Car” asks God to join his angels to the car and recalls the Ethiopian official in his chariot (Acts 8).

Before the first drive, a new owner can pray: “Lord, thank you for this car. Keep everyone who rides in it safe, keep me careful and patient at the wheel, and help me use it to serve other people. Amen.” Orthodox and Catholic priests also bless new cars with holy water and a set prayer from their service books.
