Waar landde de ark van Noach? Het Araratgebergte, maar welke top?

  • Genesis 8:4 zegt dat de ark rustte “op de bergen van Ararat”, wat een land aanduidt en de berg in het midden laat. Ararat is de Hebreeuwse vorm van Urartu, een oud koninkrijk tussen de Aras en de bovenloop van de Tigris.
  • De Armeense traditie en de meeste moderne zoekers houden vast aan de Grote Ararat, die de Armeniërs Masis noemen. Hiëronymus wees naar de toppen boven de Araxes-vlakte rond 410; Armeense christelijke teksten die Masis noemen, overleven sinds de 11e eeuw, en geleerden zijn het oneens over hoe ver de overtuiging teruggaat.
  • De Targoems, Genesis Rabbah en de Syrische Peshitta verplaatsen de ark naar het zuiden naar Corduene (Qardu). Een klooster daar tegen de 5e eeuw, en latere islamitische traditie, vestigen het op de berg Judi (Cudi Dağı) nabij Cizre, ongeveer 300 kilometer ten zuidwesten van Ararat.
  • St. Jacob van Nisibis werd wakker en vond hout van de ark onder zijn hoofd. De vroegste geschiedenis die over hem vertelt, geschreven rond 470, plaatst zijn berg in Korduk’; de Armeense Kerk vertelt vandaag het verhaal van de berg Ararat en bewaart het fragment in Etsjmiadzin.
  • Christenen verschillen nog steeds van mening over de locatie: Rick Lanser van ABR geeft de voorkeur aan Ararat, Bill Crouse van CMI geeft de voorkeur aan de berg Judi, en Tim Clarey van ICR stelt een bergrug ten westen van Ararat voor.
  • De zoektocht gaat door bij de Durupınar-heuvel nabij Ararat. Resultaten van koolstof-14-datering op verbrand hout worden vanuit Frankrijk verwacht rond eind oktober 2026 en vanuit Turkije ongeveer drie maanden later, en het definitieve radarrapport eind november; er is tot nu toe geen oud hout geïdentificeerd.

Genesis says the ark rested “upon the mountains of Ararat,” and tells us no more about the place. Ararat is the Hebrew form of Urartu, an ancient kingdom in the highlands between the Aras and the upper Tigris, in what is now eastern Turkey, Armenia and north-western Iran.
