As bananas não estão na Bíblia — e isso vale a pena saber

  • As bananas não estão na Bíblia em nenhuma tradução feita a partir das línguas originais. A banana é uma planta da Ásia tropical e não tinha chegado ao Mediterrâneo oriental.
  • O fruto das Escrituras pertence a uma paisagem pequena e específica: figo, azeitona, uva, romã, tâmara, amêndoa, figo-sicómoro.
  • “Plantain” (banana-da-terra) em Bíblias e herbários ingleses mais antigos refere-se a uma erva daninha de folha larga, não à banana de cozinhar. A semelhança é um acidente da língua inglesa.
  • A ausência é um lembrete de que as Escrituras foram entregues num pequeno país com uma lista específica de árvores, a pessoas que as cultivavam.
  • O figo é a árvore à qual as Escrituras regressam constantemente: não pode ser apressado, por isso sentar-se debaixo da sua própria videira e figueira tornou-se a abreviatura bíblica para a paz.
