概要
- 結婚前の迷いは一般的です。232組の新婚カップルを対象とした調査では、3分の2のカップルにおいて、少なくとも一方が結婚に対して不安を感じていたことが分かりました。
- 同調査では、迷いがあった妻の19％が4年後に離婚していましたが、迷いがなかった妻では8％でした。
- 結婚前の迷いについて直接言及した聖書の箇所はありませんが、マタイによる福音書には、「正しい人」であったヨセフが、天使からマリアを妻として迎えるように告げられるまで、婚約を解消しようと決意していたことが記されています（マタイ1:18–24）。
- カトリックの教えでは、「強制や重大な外部からの恐怖がない」同意が求められており、教会法では婚約を強制することはできないとされています（カトリック教会のカテキズム1628、教会法1062条、1103条）。
- 1662年の英国国教会祈祷書には、結婚は「軽率に、安易に、あるいは不謹慎に」行われるべきではないと記されています。
- 2006年の調査では、結婚準備教育と結婚の満足度の高さ、対立の少なさ、離婚率の低さとの関連が示されましたが、因果関係までは証明できませんでした。
