概要

  • パウロは自分のように皆が独身であればよいと願い、「結婚しないままでいる人は、さらに良いことをするのです」と書き、結婚は罪ではないと述べました（コリント人への第一の手紙7章7〜9、28、38節）。
  • その理由は、脇目も振らない献身のためです。独身者は「主のこと」を思い煩い、既婚者は配偶者を喜ばせることを思い煩うからです（コリント人への第一の手紙7章32〜35節）。
  • イエスは、「天の御国のために」独身を通すことは、「そのように許された人」のためのものであると語られました（マタイの福音書19章10〜12節）。
  • カトリック教会は、御国のための独身生活はより高い状態であり、独身生活も結婚もどちらも主から来るものであると教えています（トリエント公会議、カテキズム1618〜1620）。
  • 正教会は既婚男性を司祭に叙階しますが、主教は独身男性または妻を亡くした男性（通常は修道士）から選ばれます。
  • プロテスタントの信仰告白は、独身生活がより聖なる状態であるという考えを否定し、同意できるすべての人は結婚してよいと教えています。
