聖書に砂糖はないが、蜂蜜についての警告はある

  • 聖書には砂糖は登場しません。サトウキビは古代近東には伝わっておらず、エレミヤ書6章20節やイザヤ書43章24節にある「良い葦」は、甘味料ではなく香料として使われる芳香性の葦のことです。
  • 聖書における甘さとは蜂蜜のことです。約束の地は乳と蜜の流れる地であり、詩編119編103節では神の言葉が蜂蜜に例えられています。
  • エゼキエルは蜂蜜のように甘い巻物を食べますが(3章3節)、その内容は嘆きでした。サムソンはライオンの死骸の中に蜂蜜を見つけ(士師記14章8節)、ヨナタンは悲劇的な日に森の中で蜂蜜を見つけました(サムエル記上14章27節)。
  • 箴言25章16節は、良いものに対して純粋に量という観点から警告を発している聖書唯一の箇所です。「十分なだけ食べよ。食べ過ぎれば吐き出してしまうだろう。」
  • 聖書には夢解きの鍵はありません(創世記40章8節)。関連付けられるのは、純粋な良さ、困難な場所で見出される甘さ、そして過剰さです。
