翡翠は聖書に登場しない — 聖書の石が実際に意味していたこと

  • 翡翠は聖書に登場しません。主要な翻訳、石のリスト、祭司の装束、新しいエルサレムの城壁のどこにも見当たりません。
  • ヘブライ語の石の名前が何を指していたのか、学者たちの間でも意見が分かれています。古代の名前は鉱物組成よりも色や硬さを表すものが多く、翻訳者の間でも何世紀にもわたって議論が続いてきました。
  • 大祭司の胸当てには、部族の名前が刻まれた12個の石がはめ込まれており、聖所に入るたびに「胸の上」に着けられていました(出エジプト記28:29)。
  • その意味は鉱物そのものにあったのではありません。神の御前に全員の名前を運ぶ人間がいた、という点に意味があったのです。
  • イザヤ書49章16節はそれを逆転させています。「見よ、私はあなたを私の手のひらに刻んだ」。聖書は、石そのものに力が宿るとはどこにも教えていません。
