概要

  • 1857年9月7日から11日にかけて発生したマウンテンメドウズの虐殺は、ユタ州でモルモン教の民兵がベイカー・ファンチャー隊の幌馬車隊を襲撃し、少なくとも120人の移民が死亡した事件である。
  • 過去の迫害による恐怖やトラウマ、そして過激な宗教的レトリックが犠牲者の人間性を否定することにつながり、加害者は自らの行動を正当防衛として正当化することができた。
  • ブリガム・ヤングは虐殺を直接命令したわけではないが、事件の一因となる恐怖の環境を助長し、地元の指導者たちが攻撃を実行した。
  • 犠牲者と加害者の子孫の間で最近行われている和解への取り組みは、合同追悼式や許しの行為を通じて歴史的な傷を癒すことを目的としている。
