概要
- Melanie is not in the Bible. It comes through French Mélanie from Latin Melania, from Greek melaina, “black, dark.”
- Saint Melania the Younger inherited one of the largest fortunes in the Roman world and gave all of it away, freeing thousands her family had enslaved; her grandmother Melania the Elder had done much the same.
- Song of Songs 1:5 has a young woman say “Dark am I, yet lovely” — describing skin marked by outdoor work, to city women looking down on her, and refusing to apologise.
- The Hebrew allows “and” as readily as “yet”, and many scholars prefer the braver reading: dark および lovely.
- Scripture repeatedly finds God in darkness — thick darkness on the mountain, a dark cloud at the temple, the exodus at night, the resurrection before dawn. “Even the darkness will not be dark to you” (Psalm 139:12).
