  • Jesus tells a worshipper who remembers that someone “has something against you” to leave the gift at the altar and be reconciled first (Matthew 5:23-24).
  • Matthew 18:15 sets the first conversation about a brother or sister’s sin “just between the two of you,” and Jesus later tells Peter to forgive “seventy-seven times” (18:22).
  • Romans 12:18 limits the call to peace to “as far as it depends on you,” and the verses around it forbid revenge.
  • Paul pleads with two women in the church at Philippi, Euodia and Syntyche, to be of the same mind, and asks a companion to help them (Philippians 4:2-3).
  • Malachi 2:14 calls the Lord “the witness” between a husband and “the wife of your youth.”

The Bible’s instructions for a troubled relationship are to go to the other person, to forgive, and to watch what is said. Jesus tells a worshipper to be reconciled before offering his gift (Matthew 5:23-24).
