Amish vs. Mormon: Two Unrelated Faiths, Born in 1693 and 1830

  • The Amish are not Mormon. They are Anabaptist Christians who formed their own church under Jakob Ammann in Switzerland and Alsace in 1693; Joseph Smith organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York in 1830.
  • The Amish affirm the Trinity in the Dordrecht Confession of 1632 and read the Bible; Latter-day Saints believe the Father, Son and Holy Ghost are three separate beings and add the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price.
  • The Amish baptize adults, most between 18 and 22, and worship in homes every other Sunday; Latter-day Saints baptize children at 8, meet in meetinghouses every Sunday and hold sealings and other ordinances in temples.
  • Old Order Amish do not own cars, use power from public lines or own televisions and computers; Latter-day Saints live in modern society and keep the Word of Wisdom, which rules out alcohol, tobacco, tea and coffee.
  • The long pastel dresses seen in news photographs belong to the FLDS, a polygamous group with no affiliation to the Church of Jesus Christ, which began ending plural marriage with the 1890 Manifesto and banned new ones in 1904.
  • About 421,200 Amish in horse-and-buggy groups lived in North America in 2026; the Church of Jesus Christ reported 17,887,212 members and 78,596 missionaries at the end of 2025.

The Amish are not Mormon, and the two faiths have no historical link, though both center life on family and modest dress.
