  • 1 John 5:13 gives its purpose as “that you may know that you have eternal life,” written to people who already believe.
  • “Full assurance” translates the Greek 確信, used for the full assurance of hope in Hebrews 6:11 and of faith in Hebrews 10:22.
  • 2 Corinthians 1:22 calls the Spirit a “guarantee,” the Greek アラボン, a pledge or deposit, and Ephesians 1:14 uses the same word for the Spirit as the guarantee of the believer’s inheritance.
  • 1 John 2:3 and 2 Peter 1:10 connect assurance with keeping God’s commandments and practising the qualities that grow from faith.
  • The Westminster Confession holds that true believers may be certainly assured of their salvation and cannot finally fall away; the Council of Trent and the Methodist Articles of Religion teach that a justified person can fall from grace.
