  • メノナイトが「once」と言うのは神学的な理由ではなく、ドイツ語の文法によるものです。ドイツ語では mal — 短縮形 一度 — を和らげる言葉として使い、「come here once」は英語の単語で「komm mal her」となります。
  • ペンシルベニア・ダッチはドイツ語の方言であり、主にプファルツ地方のもので、1680年代からペンシルベニアにもたらされました。それらのコミュニティが英語を話し始めたとき、その構造が引き継がれました。
  • 同じ基層から「still」や「yet」が noch, から生まれ、「redd up」、「outen the light」、「the butter is all」といった表現も同様です。
