聖書にカメは登場しない — キングジェームズ版の「カメ」はハトのこと

  • 聖書にカメは登場しません。欽定訳聖書の「turtle(カメ)の声」(雅歌2:12)はキジバトを指しており、ヘブライ語では tor, 、ラテン語では turtur.
  • と言います。「Turtle」は当時、英語で鳥を意味していました。爬虫類がこの言葉を使うようになったのは後のことで、船乗りたちの用法が広まったためと考えられます。
  • 聖書におけるキジバトの重要性は、貧しい人への備えにあります。レビ記12章8節では、子羊を買う余裕のない人のために、2羽の鳩を捧げることが認められています。
  • ルカによる福音書2章24節には、マリアとヨセフがまさにそれを捧げたことが記されており、それ以上の説明はありません。レビ記を知る読者であれば、その意味は明らかでした。
  • 忍耐、緩慢さ、家を背負うといったカメの連想は、聖書ではなく民間伝承に由来する私たちの解釈です。忍耐に関するヤコブの手紙1章4節の教えの方が、それらよりもはるかに厳しいものです。
