Não existem tartarugas na Bíblia — a tartaruga da King James é uma rola



  • Não existem tartarugas na Bíblia. A “voz da rola” da King James (Cântico dos Cânticos 2:12) é uma rola — hebraico tor, latim turtur.
  • “Turtle” significava a ave em inglês na época. O réptil apropriou-se da palavra mais tarde, aparentemente através do uso pelos marinheiros.
  • O significado da rola nas Escrituras é a provisão para os pobres: Levítico 12:8 permite duas rolas a qualquer pessoa que não possa pagar um cordeiro.
  • Lucas 2:24 regista que Maria e José trouxeram exatamente isso, sem comentários. Qualquer leitor que conhecesse Levítico sabia o que isso significava.
  • As associações com a tartaruga — paciência, lentidão, carregar a casa — são nossas, provenientes do folclore e não das Escrituras. Tiago 1:4 sobre a perseverança é mais exigente do que qualquer uma delas.
