Samenvatting

  • De woorden “come as you are” komen in geen enkele vertaling van de Bijbel voor.
  • De verzen die hier het dichtst bij in de buurt komen, zijn de belofte van Jezus dat “wie tot mij komt, zal ik geenszins uitwerpen” (Johannes 6:37), zijn oproep in Matteüs 11:28, Jesaja 55:1 en de laatste uitnodiging van de Bijbel in Openbaring 22:17.
  • De evangelist César Malan zei tegen Charlotte Elliott: “Kom tot hem precies zoals je bent,” en ongeveer twaalf jaar later schreef zij “Just as I Am,” dat voor het eerst werd gepubliceerd in 1836.
  • Latere liederen genaamd “Come as You Are” zijn onder meer een katholieke hymne van zuster Deirdre Browne en een nummer uit 2014 van Crowder.
  • In het Nieuwe Testament leidt de uitnodiging ergens naartoe: Jezus kwam om “zondaars tot bekering” te roepen (Lukas 5:32).

No, the words “come as you are” are not in the Bible. We know them from hymns and songs, and from a minister who told the hymn writer Charlotte Elliott to come to Christ “just as you are.” The nearest verse is a promise of Jesus: “whoever comes to me I will never cast out” (John 6:37).
