  • Brown is not a colour word in biblical Hebrew. The King James uses it in Genesis 30 for Jacob’s sheep, translating chum, a rare word meaning dark or dusky.
  • What is everywhere is earth. Genesis 2:7 contains a pun English cannot carry: the man is 亚当 and the ground is adamah.
  • Dust runs in two directions at once — Abraham calling himself dust and ashes, and Psalm 103:14 giving “he remembers that we are dust” as the reason for God’s compassion.
  • Jeremiah is sent to watch a potter and sees a failure: the pot is marred, and the clay is not thrown out (18:4).
  • 2 Corinthians 4:7 puts the treasure in jars of clay deliberately, so nobody mistakes the packaging for the contents.

Brown is not a colour word in the Bible. But the most important brown thing in Scripture is there on the first page, and the first man is named after it. The word that is not there Biblical Hebrew has a small colour vocabulary and it names materials and dyes rather than points on a spectrum. There is no term for brown. The King James does use the word, in Genesis 30, for the sheep Jacob separates from Laban’s flock.…
