ラベンダーは聖書に登場するか?いいえ、福音書のナルドは別の植物です

  • ラベンダーはヘブライ語やギリシャ語の聖書、あるいは標準的な英語やスペイン語の翻訳には記載されていません。唯一、『ザ・メッセージ』という意訳版が雅歌4章14節でこの言葉を使用しています。
  • 雅歌1章12節、4章13~14節、マルコによる福音書14章3節、ヨハネによる福音書12章3節に登場するナード(スパイクナード)は、聖書辞典では次のように特定されています。 Nardostachys jatamansi(ナルドスタキス・ジャタマンシ), 、ヒマラヤの植物です。
  • ヘブライ語 ナード はペルシャを経由してインドから伝わったもので、その香油は非常に高価でした。ユダはマリアが持っていた1ポンドの香油を300デナリと評価しました(ヨハネによる福音書12章5節)。
  • ナードがラベンダーであったという主張は、モード・グリーブの著書に引用されているヴィクトリア朝時代のハーブ書にまで遡ります。 『A Modern Herbal(現代ハーブ事典)』 (1931).
  • 大プリニウスは、ナードには「偽のナード」が混ぜられていたと述べており、現代の学者の中にはそれをラベンダーと特定する人もいます。
  • 今日、イスラエルにはいくつかの野生のラベンダーが自生しており、その中には Lavandula stoechas(フレンチラベンダー) が沿岸平野に見られます。

No. Lavender is not named in the Hebrew or Greek text of the Bible or in any standard English translation. The plant sometimes confused with it is nard, or spikenard, the costly perfume poured over Jesus at Bethany. Bible dictionaries identify that nard as Nardostachys jatamansi, a plant of the Himalayas, not as lavender. Does any Bible translation mention lavender? Only a paraphrase does.
