Resumo
- The “great cloud of witnesses” in Hebrews 12:1 is the believers named in Hebrews 11, from Abel, Enoch and Noah through Abraham, Sarah, Moses and Rahab to Gideon, David, Samuel and the prophets, with many unnamed sufferers.
- “Cloud” is an old image for a crowd too large to count; the Greek word means a mass of cloud that covers the sky.
- The Greek word for witnesses, martys, meant someone who testifies; because testifying to Christ could cost a life, it came to mean one who died for the faith, and by the fourth century it was reserved for them. It gave English the word “martyr.”
- Commentators divide on whether the witnesses are spectators watching the race or people whose lives testify to faith; many see both, and some say Scripture does not reveal whether the departed see us.
- Verse 2 turns the reader’s eyes to Jesus, “the founder and perfecter of our faith” (King James: “the author and finisher”), who leads the way and brings faith to its goal.
- Catholic and Orthodox churches teach that the saints pray for us and may be asked to. The Lutheran Apology grants that they pray for the Church in general, while noting that Scripture gives no testimony of it outside 2 Maccabees, and the Augsburg Confession says Scripture does not teach invoking them. The Anglican Thirty-Nine Articles reject the invocation of saints, and the Westminster and 1689 Baptist confessions treat prayer as worship owed to God alone, without saying whether the saints in heaven pray.
- The Orthodox read Hebrews 11:33–12:2 on the Sunday of All Saints; Western churches keep All Saints’ Day on 1 November.
