圣经中从未提到过大象。一些较旧的译本将《约伯记》中的某种生物译为大象，但希伯来语原文并不确定，现代译本均未采用此译法。
象牙在圣经中反复出现。所罗门的船队每三年带回“金、银、象牙、猿猴、孔雀”（列王纪上 10:22），他还制作了一座巨大的象牙宝座。
在先知书中，象牙总是那些拥有过剩财富之人的象征。阿摩司谴责那些躺在镶嵌象牙的床上的人。
他指责的并非象牙本身，而是随后的那句话：他们“不为约瑟的苦难担忧”（阿摩司书 6:4-6）。这种安逸已不再触动他们。
圣经在描述圣殿的金子和香柏木时并无责备之意。阿摩司所抨击的是在无人哀悼的废墟旁所享有的奢华。

Elephants are not in the Bible. The animal is never named, in any book — but its tusks are, repeatedly, and where they turn up says something uncomfortable and worth hearing. Are elephants mentioned in the Bible? No. Not in the law, the histories, the poetry or the Gospels.
