  • アナベルは聖書には登場しません。この名前は中世スコットランドで、ラテン語の amabilis, (「愛すべき」)から派生したAmabelの異形として生まれました。メイベル(Mabel)と同じ語源です。
  • 綴りは後に、アンナ(Anna)とフランス語の belle. を組み合わせたかのように変更されました。その解釈は語源俗説であり、本来の派生ではありません。
  • アンナ自身はルカによる福音書2章36-38節に登場します。彼女は預言者であり、結婚して7年で夫を亡くし、84歳になるまで「神殿を離れず、断食と祈りをもって夜も昼も神に仕えて」いました。

Annabel is not in the Bible. It arose in medieval Scotland as a variant of Amabel — the Latin amabilis, “lovable” — and the spelling was later altered as though it were Anna joined to the French belle, beautiful.
