Annabel não está na Bíblia — mas a Anna nela aponta para algo real

  • Annabel não está na Bíblia. Surgiu na Escócia medieval como uma variante de Amabel, do latim amabilis, “amável” — a mesma raiz de Mabel.
  • A grafia foi posteriormente alterada como se o nome fosse Anna mais o francês belle. Essa leitura é uma etimologia popular, não uma derivação.
  • A própria Ana está em Lucas 2:36-38: uma profetisa, viúva após sete anos de casamento, que “nunca saía do templo, mas adorava noite e dia, em jejum e oração” até aos oitenta e quatro anos.
  • Uma viúva sem filhos não tinha estatuto nem segurança. Ela não tinha motivos para esperar nada, e continuou a aparecer.
  • Ela reconheceu a criança de um casal pobre que só podia pagar dois pássaros em vez de um cordeiro, e falou sobre ele a todos os que esperavam.

Annabel is not in the Bible. It arose in medieval Scotland as a variant of Amabel — the Latin amabilis, “lovable” — and the spelling was later altered as though it were Anna joined to the French belle, beautiful.
