カバは聖書に登場するか?名前はないが、ヨブ記のベヘモトをカバと特定する説は多い



  • 聖書にはヘブライ語でカバを指す言葉は存在しない。最も近いのはヨブ記40章15~24節に登場するベヘモットであり、草を食べ、葦や蓮の茂みに横たわり、荒れ狂う川をも恐れない存在として描かれている。
  • 現代の多くの翻訳聖書は注釈でベヘモットをカバと特定しており、『Contemporary English Version』や『The Living Bible』では本文中に「カバ」と記されている。
  • イスラエルの沿岸平野から発見されたカバの骨は、この動物が鉄器時代(紀元前1200~586年頃)までそこに生息していたことを示している。
  • トマス・アクィナスはベヘモットをゾウと解釈し、教皇グレゴリウス1世とアクィナスの両者は、これを悪魔の象徴と見なした。
  • 他の学者は神話上の混沌の怪物と見ており、『エズラ記第4書』6章49~52節などのユダヤ教文献では、ベヘモットとレヴィアタンが対で語られている。
