  • Charlotteという名前は聖書には登場しません。これはCharlesのフランス語の女性形で、ゲルマン語のKarlに由来し、「人間」を意味する語根から来ています。おそらく「軍隊」を意味する要素に由来する可能性があります。
  • 一般的な「自由な女性」という解釈は、中世後期にKarlが農奴ではなく自由な人間を意味するようになった後のものです。これが本来の語根ではありません。

Charlotte is not in the Bible. It is the French feminine of Charles, and Charles comes from the Germanic Karl — a word that meant, quite simply, man. We should pause on that, dear friends, because a great many pages will tell us the name means “free woman,” and the freedom is a later gloss rather than the root.
